Friday Harbor’s youth Tiger Football teams made it to the playoffs this season.
“All three youth tigers football teams made it to the playoffs this year. The pee-wees and freshmen were defending champions,” said Shawn Kleine, president of the Friday Harbor Athletic Association, and Freshman Tigers head coach.
On Saturday, Nov. 11, the youngest group, the pee-wees, played against Granite Falls, whom they had beat during the regular season 27-19, according to Kleine. Granite Falls fought back in the championship game, out scoring the Peewees by 38-19.
“We took home the second place trophy,” Kleine said.
Next up were the Friday Harbor “freshmen,” ages 9-10. The big game was Nov. 11 against La Conner, and they put up a fight. The final score was 16-6, making the freshman Tigers the champions.
The junior Tigers (11, 12, and 13-year-olds) played against the powerhouse team the Cubs, beating them 26-13. That win brought them to the semifinals on Nov. 11, where they lost to the Anacortes Seahawks.
“Thank you to all of the amazing kids, fans cheerleaders and Tiger moms,” Kleine said.
