So close and yet…

The Friday Harbor girls tennis team will be looking to snap a winless streak and net its first match “that counts” Friday, April 3, at home against a longtime familiar foe, division 1A Coupeville.

Match time is 2:30 p.m.

Seniors Sophie Dillery and Summer Fox, playing in the No. 2 doubles slot, nearly tallied the team’s first win a week ago at home against 3A Lynden High School’s junior varsity squad. They split the first two sets, 7-6 3-6, and took Lyden’s Emily Brown and Tara Gartner deep into a tie-breaker before falling 11-9 in the deciding showdown.

“It’s really fun when you play a team that is so evenly matched and we are happy with our efforts,” Dillery said of the tightly contested match.

The Wolverines dropped all five “counting” matches against the Lions’ JV squad.

In a best-of-five format, the outcome the top two singles and top three doubles contest determine the result of the team head-to-head matchup.

In the season opener at South Whidbey, Ashton Timmons nearly tallied a win in the No. 1 singles contest, bouncing back from a narrow loss in the opening set to claim the second set, and then coming up short in a tie-breaker. The Wolverines were swept by the Falcons as well.
