Never mind the small ball.

The Friday Harbor softball team flexed its muscles at the plate in tattooing back-to-back losses on Concrete Saturday at home. The Wolverines outscored the Lions by a combined score of 25-1 in a convincing sweep of the league doubleheader.

Friday Harbor improved to 5-3 overall and notched its third consecutive win in Northwest 1A/2B League without a loss.

Seniors Brooke Jangard and Kelsie Carlton each blasted a two-run homer over the centerfield fence in the opener as the Wolverines ran away with a 13-0 win.

The show of force continued in the sequel with sophomore Elle Guard providing the highlight, a triple into left field that struck the top of the fence and dropped into play, and that drove in three runs.

Friday Harbor took the second game 12-1 in just five innings.

Patience proved key in zeroing in on the Lions’ leisurely-paced pitches, Head Coach Kevin Carlton said.

“We’d seen some pretty strong pitching in our last few games and it took us a couple of innings to adjust to their speed,” Carlton said.

“We were way out in front and popping up all over the place at the start. The key is keeping the hands and the weight back.”

On the mound, junior Kerri Goff overpowered the Lions to pick up a pair of victories. She tossed a five-inning no-hitter in the opener, striking out seven and walking four, and gave up just two hits and one run in the closing game.

They are home on Thursday to host Nooksack Valley and the Erika Ramstead-led Pioneers. Game time is 4:30 p.m., and travel to Orcas Saturday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader with the Vikings.
