The Wolverines brought home the hardware in a big way for accomplishments on the field, as well as in the classroom, this spring sports season.

Leading the pack, if you will, is Friday Harbor’s Elle Guard, selected as Player of the Year in the Northwest 1A/2B League’s 2011 fast-pitch softball season. Guard, the Wolverines lead-off hitter and starter at third base, proved to be a major catalyst in Friday Harbor’s late-season surge and improbable post-season run.

The Wolverines claimed their first-ever Tri-District championship, defeating three consecutive opponents by 10 runs or more, and clinched their first-ever appearance at the Division 1A state fast-pitch softball tournament.

Earning first-team all-league honors this softball season are seniors Maggie Andersen, Lindsey Banry, Margaret Nash and Hannah Starr. Friday Harbor sophomores Kaylen Meeker and Jean Melborne earned second-team all-league honors, as did junior Liz Taylor. The Wolverines were also awarded for their academic prowess, earning the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Distinguished award, with a 3.14 collective team GPA.

Friday Harbor 2011 baseball team, which for the seventh year in a row clinched either the Northwest 1A/2B League title outright or a share of it, was also decorated with a host of post-season awards (they share the 2011 league title with La Conner).

Seniors Tanner Buck, Shawn Cutting, Alex Jangard and Roy Taylor are first-team all-league selections, and senior Charles Nash, and freshmen Austin and Brandon Lambright earned second-team all-league honors. With a collective 3.40 team GPA, the Friday Harbor baseball team also was awarded a WIAA academic Distinguished award.

On the golf course, senior Megan Cuomo and freshmen Kendra Meeker together achieved what no other Friday Harbor golf team has, clinching third-place  at the Division 1A state golf tournament and delivering the team its first-ever Top Ten tournament finish in the women’s field.

On the tennis court, junior Rebecca Leff qualified for her third consecutive appearance at the Quad-District tournament by claiming the region’s No. 1 singles championship. Senior Kelsey Barnes earned her third straight trip to the Division 1A Track and Field tournament by claiming first place in the shot putt at the Tri-District championship meet.

Joining the baseball and softball teams with post-season academic honors, are the girls tennis and track teams, and the boys track, golf and soccer teams.
