Friday Harbor High School boys’ basketball team beat the Sultan High School Turks, 45 to 33, in their second win of the season at a home game on Wednesday, Dec. 6. The Wolverines have played four games this school year.
Seconds before the end of the third quarter, the Turks inched closer to Friday Harbor’s lead, by ending 33 to 30.
At the top of the final quarter, Friday Harbor took a 30-second timeout to regain momentum. It was the motivation needed. With about five minutes on the clock, Senior Rio Black, No. 23, led the charge with a two-pointer.
The Turks followed by making a two-point shot. Even though Sultan snatched the ball from the Wolverines several times, they couldn’t make substantial scores.
With about three minutes left, Senior Isaac Mayer, No. 25, shot a two-pointer.
Shouts from the crowd encouraged players to let the clock run out with them in the lead. Another shot by Black set the final score of 45 to 33.
With seconds left, the Turks stole the ball for a last-ditch Hail Mary, while the home crowd started to clap. Everyone knew before the buzzer closed the game — the Wolverines had taken the win.
Friday Harbor lost to Lynden Christian, 31 to 83, on Nov. 28, but beat the Seattle Lutheran Saints, 65 to 59, on Dec. 1. The next day, they lost to the Kings Knights, 36 to 66.
The Wolverines take on the Mountaineers on Saturday, Dec. 9, at Mount Baker, then Mount Vernon Christian on Friday, Dec. 15 at home.
