As with the preceding game of the night, both girls’ teams came out fired up for the first of two interisland rivalry games against Orcas Island last Tuesday.
Hard defensive playing by both teams kept the score low in the first half, as the girl Vikings started to grow their lead. A couple key, clean three-point shots by the Orcas girls, and missed shots by Friday Harbor, kept the Vikings ahead into the second half of the game.
As the game clock wound down, Alexa Mora drove to the basket on two consecutive possessions, each time sinking timely layups to keep the Wolverines close with only six minutes left. With only one minute to go, Ciera Bailey scored from the inside, then Kiana Woods hit a jump shot to bring the Wolverines within five points of the lead. Having been down by 15 earlier in the game, this made the closest score of the night.
Despite a strong late game surge by Friday Harbor, the Orcas girls were triumphant with a win and 45-38 final score.
