The Wolverines have a tailored-made opportunity to surpass last season’s win total with back-to-back matches this week against Mount Vernon Christian and Concrete.

The Concrete Lions are winless so far this season, while the Mount Vernon Christian Hurricanes have just one win in Northwest 1A/2B League competition, and that was against the Lions.

But to do so, Friday Harbor (2-7 league, 2-10 overall) will have to shake off a disappointing defeat at home Saturday at the hands of Shoreline Christian. The Crusaders clinched in four games as the Wolverines ran out of steam down the stretch, losing game No. 4 by the widest margin — 25-13 — of the three.

“It’s frustrating,” senior Meghan McCormick said. “We’re definitely a lot better this year, but there’s always just one thing that’s out of place in the matches we could’ve won.”

Five-game affairs had become the norm for the league rivals. The Wolverines pressed Shoreline Christian into five games in three consecutive matches dating back to last season. But the Crusaders were at the top of their game Saturday and needed only four to claim the match this time around.

Shoreline Christian prevailed 25-21, 27-29, 17-25, 25-13.
