Funding woes have the fate of Friday Harbor High School’s sports program in jeopardy.

But if athletics end up on the shelf, a whole lot more hardware will end up there as well, thanks to the players and teams of the 2008 fall season.

Seventeen Wolverines brought home individual honors at the fall sports awards ceremony, Dec. 3 in Turnbull Gym.

Four teams earned academic awards while three — football, girls soccer and tennis — claimed Northwest 1A/2B League titles and accompanying trophies.

On the athletic field, perhaps no one shined more brightly than senior Whitney Porter. Porter, who scored 71 goals during a four-year tenure on the team and this year tallied a total of 26, led Friday Harbor to its first-ever league title and was named league Most Valuable Player.

Joining Porter as first-team All-League selections were goalie Hannah Snow and midfielders Elle Guard and Hannah Starr. Second-team selections were Alex MacDonald, Fabiola Bell, Clara Brand, Megan Anderson, Mandy Turnbull and Larissa Nash.

In volleyball, senior Kelsie Carlton earned All-League honorable mention.

The Wolverines were recognized for their accomplishments in the classroom as well as on the field. The boys tennis team and girls soccer squad earned “Outstanding” team awards with collective GPAs of 3.72 and 3.65, respectively. The cheerleading squad earned “Distinguished” honors thanks to a collective 3.41 GPA, as did the football team, which weighed in with a 3.12 GPA.

Six football players earned post-season honors. Junior Parker Lawson was named first-team All-League on offense and on defense, while senior Cody Price was honored as All-League first-team kicker. Seniors Calen Mehrer and Austin Scheffer, junior Michael Knowles, and sophomore Roy Taylor were second-team All-League picks.
