Friday Harbor’s track team returns this spring for a second season under the leadership of coach Shannon Plummer. He said he is excited to return to the helm of the program.
Plummer, who has spent 23 years as part of the school’s football program, accepted the position of track head coach last year. He was a pole-vaulter and hurdler during his high school track days. Also returning to help coach the team this year is assistant coach James “Lumpy” Sane, who is a record-holding long-distance runner who did track in the 1970s.
The team is comprised of 23 students this year. Eleven team members are repeated athletes – including Ryan Schaefer, who travels to practice from Center Island, returns for his final season with the Wolverines. The other 12 athletes are new to the team this season. Plummer said he doesn’t want to put his team under any pressure this year and just looks forward to seeing what they can achieve.
“[I’m] looking forward to my stars shining,” said Plummer. “GO WOLVERINES!!!!!”
The team’s first league meet is on Wednesday, March 13, against Concrete, Mount Vernon and LaConner, who is hosting the meet. Then the team travels to Concrete the following week, on Wednesday, March 20, to face off against those teams once again.
On Saturday, April 13, the Wolverines will travel to the Mountlake Terrace Invite, where they’ll face the host team as well as 17 additional teams from across the region. There will be no meets at Friday Harbor this season.
