Friday Harbor’s tennis team wrapped up its regular season with a match at home against the Seattle Kings on May 2.
“We lost 2-3 but had great wins from both of our senior doubles teams. We played King’s close a few weeks ago, with both double’s teams losing in tiebreakers, but I think our girls really wanted to win their last match,” said coach Kevin Cullen. “Katy Kulseth and Tori Polda won in straight sets, and Lucy Urbach and Joely Loucks split sets, but won in the third. I was very proud of these ladies as well as the rest of the team. We are in a really tough league, and it is hard to battle match after match. They earned these wins, and I was happy to see them come out on top.”
The team competed in districts at Granite Falls on May 7, sending players Kulseth, Polda, Urbach and Loucks. Aida Must and Alli Benz competed in singles.
“Our varsity girls have been playing some of the best 1A singles and doubles teams in the state, and though we haven’t come out on top in any of the matches, many of them have split sets and gone to tiebreaks, a few of these matches lasting over two hours!” said Cullen. “These girls have impressed me day in and day out with their grit and the fact that they do not back down from challenging opponents. Our JV girls have also done very well. They have been developing their game, and many of them have been winning their matches. I am excited for them and for the future of the program.”
