Friday Harbor Wolverines track coach Darrin Scheffer can’t remember the last time nine of his athletes advanced to the Tri-District meet.

“I am very pleased with every team member’s efforts throughout this season,” he said.

Individually and collectively, the Wolverines have given him and their fans a lot to be pleased with.

At the District 1 meet May 13 and 15, nine members of the track team advanced another step closer to State.

— Boys 1600m relay team: (Jaime Guerrero, Miklos Horvath, Lucas Jagel, Otto Schmidt, Wilson Schubert, Malcolm Wynn).

— Fei Cooper: 100m, 200m.

— Christine GrosJacques: high jump.

— Miklos Horvath: 100m, 200m.

— Kia Johns: 100m, hurdles, long jump.

— Otto Schmidt: 800, 1600, 3200.

— Kayla Short: 100m, long jump, javelin.

Scheffer said Schmidt’s three-event qualifying is testimony to his versatility as a runner and the depth of his training.

He called Short’s qualifying in all three of her events “an amazing feat.” In addition, she missed taking firsts in javelin and long jump by only a matter of inches.

Horvath fell the last 5 meters of his preliminary race on May 13 and still qualified for finals on Friday; he then went on to qualify for Tri-District despite badly skinned knees.

Johns missed competing last year because of a leg injury. She survived two broken fingers just a few weeks back to make it in the 100m hurdles.

“That is quite a testimony to her ability to overcome obstacles and still reach her goals,” Scheffer said.

Next: The Tri-District meet is Thursday and Saturday, at King’s.

The top five finishers will go on to the state meet May 29-30 at Eastern Washington University.
