Local golfers in travel magazine
They’re familiar faces on the golf course at San Juan Golf and Country Club.

But local golfers Matt Cowell and Megan Cuomo are sure to gain broader exposure with an appearance in the August issue of Northwest Travel magazine. That issue, as you may have guessed, is devoted to golf.

On page 52, the magazine features a photo of Cuomo and Cowell on one of the local course’s greens. It was snapped last summer by San Juan Island photographer Russell Illig.

The photo accompanies a four-page article on the many benefits of golf as a family-friendly activity.

An incoming Friday Harbor High School junior, Cuomo finished ninth at the 1A state golf tournament this year. Cowell, a three-time San Juan Open champ and 2004 Friday Harbor High School grad, will attend Western Washington University beginning this fall.

Signups for non-contact football
Parents can sign their children up for introductory non-contact football via a downloadable application at fridayharbortigers.blogware.com

This program, sponsored by Friday Harbor Athletic Association, is for ages 6-8. The coach is Archie Brooks.

The first day of practice is July 28 at the Friday Harbor Elementary School playing field. Practice is daily at 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday until school starts.
