It’s a long drive home from the campus of Eastern Washington University — 263 miles to be exact.

But Friday Harbor’s Kayla Short had some shiny hardware in hand to help pass the time.

Short took seventh-place overall in the long jump at the state 1A Track and Field Meet, Friday in Cheney.

Though a couple inches shy of a personal best, her longest jump at State, 15 feet 7 inches, was good enough to earn a trip to the podium and a medal for finishing in the upper half of 16 athletes who competed in that event.

The week before, Short sealed a berth at State with a 15-foot 9-inch jump and a fourth-place finish at the Tri-District meet.

A junior and three-sport athlete, Short also earned a slot at State in the javelin event, thanks to a 107-foot 6-inch heave at Tri-District. At State, she finished 13th among 16 athletes competing in that event.

“She has a lot to be proud of and represented Friday Harbor High School track well,” Head Coach Darrin Scheffer said.

With a year of eligibility left, Short will have another shot at State next year as a senior.
