Friday Harbor’s Parker Satin and Ryan Cole placed second in doubles at the District 1 tennis tournament Oct. 20 at Coupeville.

They will play a pigtail match in May in an attempt to advance to the Quad-District tournament.

Hayden Place finished third in singles, qualifying as a Quad-District alternate.

Senior Stephan Chadwick, making his District 1 tournament debut, lost 6-0, 6-0 to No. 1 singles seed Ben Hayes 6-0, 6-0. Place, a junior, lost to No. 2 seed Chase Bates of Coupeville 6-2, 6-2, to set up a match with teammate Chadwick. Place prevailed 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles competition, No. 1 seed Sam Weaver and Nate Lamb of Coupeville defeated Friday Harbor’s Elwyn Pratt and Kevin Malone 6-1, 6-2. Satin and Cole, No. 2 seed, defeated Coupeville’s Nic Anthony and Larry Hurlburt 6-4, 6-4. In the title match, Weaver and Lamb prevailed over Satin and Cole 6-1, 6-3.

Friday Harbor coach Dick Barnes was pleased that three members of his eight-man team advanced or may advance in competition, although he was smarting from having the smallest roster in his 23 years of coaching.

“When you are wading in a shallow gene pool, you shouldn’t be bailing water out of it out-of-season,” he said, referring to a new fall soccer club that drew six tennis players. Boys soccer is a spring sport.

Barnes said showing up at other schools with such small numbers was tough for his team, as well as for opponents. “It was tough for other schools because the competition wasn’t there,” he said.

Notebook: Three former Wolverine tennis players are wielding rackets on the college level this year. Peter Duggins is playing badminton for Carleton College. Josh Lehr is playing tennis for Dickinson College. Mike Sandifer is playing tennis for Western Washington University.
