With two down and another 10 weeks left to go, San Juan Island’s Marty Chevalier grabbed firm hold of first place in the 8th Annual Frank Wilson Memorial Blackmouth Derby.

Chevalier landed a near 20-pounder (19.92 lbs) to grab the top spot on the derby’s leader board as of Saturday’s final weigh-in. The weight of his catch proved nearly two times that of Week 1 winner, Carter Whalen (11.18 lbs).

Jerry Green leapfrogged into second place with a 13.44 pounder and local fishing legend and former derby winner Pete Nelson, of Shaw Island, netted an 11.49 pound keeper, good enough for third.

Founded in honor of former EMS Chief Frank Wilson, the derby runs Feb. 1 through April 15, more than two months of tight lines and competitive fishing, and for a good cause.

Proceeds from the competitive fishing event serve as an annual fundraiser for San Juan Island Emergency Medical Services.

Weekly prizes are awarded for the biggest fish of the week, and grand prizes await the participants who turn in the top three fish over the course of the derby’s 10-week run:

1st Place — $1,000, 2nd Place — $500, 3rd Place — $250. A cash prize is also awarded for the derby’s “Mystery Fish”.
