Conditions may have been ripe for an upset.

But the Wolverines bested a determined Nooksack Valley squad and a deluge to tally a 2-1 victory Saturday on a rain-soaked field at home in Friday Harbor.

Solid footing proved hard to find and shots-on-goal were at a premium as more than 2 inches of rain in 24 hours turned the soccer field at Friday Harbor High School into a slip-and-slide.

The Wolverines (10-3 overall) grabbed an early lead as senior Emma Ytander corralled a shot that rebounded off the goal post and booted it into the back of the net at the 14-minute mark of the opening half. Friday Harbor led 1-0 at the break.

The Pioneers, at 1-12 overall, erased the deficit and knotted the match at 1-1 midway in the second half as Michelle Huttema lofted a corner-kick in front of the Friday Harbor goal and teammate Courtney Edwards drove it home. Fifteen minutes later, Elle Guard put the Wolverines back out and sealed the victory with what proved to be the game-winner on an assist from Ytander. Goalie Hannah Snow posted two saves, and the Wolverines had 12 shots on goal over the course of the 80-minute match.

“Saturday’s game was really affected by the weather,” Friday Harbor Head Coach Dr. Mark Fishaut said. “This was another match with a lot of

missed shots and few goals”.
