New clubhouse and high hopes for Wolverine golf team

The FHHS Wolverines Golf team is full of returning faces, plus a few new ones this year, and Coach Jack Rice has high expectations for the season. There are 14 boys and four girls. Junior Jack Hess placed 10th last year at State, while Akira Tokunaga placed in the top twenty. Morgan Douglass also made it to state last year.

“We have a really strong girls and boys team,” Rice said, adding that five boys went to Tri-District last year, missing State by a few shots.

We have a couple of new faces, including Lily Taylor, who recently moved to the island and played golf at her previous high school and James Hollingsworth, a freshman at Spring Street. Rice said it will be exciting to see how they do through out the season.

When asked if there is any particular skill or goal the team will be working on, Rice responded that each golfer sets their own goal.

“Whether they want to go to state or just learn to play and play with their friends, it’s up to them,” Rice explained. “This is a lifetime sport. Hopefully, these kids will get excited and play for the rest of their lives.”

This year the team also has a new clubhouse that many of the kids and their parents worked on. Rice thanked the San Juan Golf and Country Club for building it for them, and the support of the Golf Foundation and the Club Board. “The opportunity the club has given these kids is unbelievable. To be able to give them a membership and let them play out here and experience golf for free is phenomenal. It doesn’t happen very often.”

On March 20, the team will be heading to Tulalip Heritage High School to play on the Battle Creek Golf Course. On March 25 at 1:30 p.m. they will be playing Orcas at the San Juan Island Golf and Country Club.
