The start of the winter sports season is just around the corner. But there’s still some business to attend to before closing the books on the 2009 fall sports season.
There will be post-season honors a plenty when the Friday Harbor fall sports awards ceremony kicks off at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Turnbull Gym.
The Friday Harbor girls soccer team, in addition to amassing a host of individual awards, will have a shiny piece of hardware to hoist up for the crowd as the squad claimed its second-straight league championship. A total of nine players were picked for post-season honors, including three first-team All-League selections.
On the volleyball court, though victories were few, senior Kayla Short turned in another stellar performance for the Wolverines. Short was selected second-team All-League, and senior Jenny Gustafson earned an All-League honorable mention.
Though the football team fell short of its expectations, the Wolverines made a big impression along the way. And no impression proved bigger than the one made by senior Parker Lawson.
The 6-foot-3-inch linebacker, also an imposing force on the offensive line, was chosen first-team All-Conference on both sides of the ball. (The conference includes Lynden Christian, Meridian, Nooksack Valley, as well as Friday Harbor. All-Conference awards are determined by the coaches.)
In addition to first-team All-Conference honors, Lawson is one of five conference players to have been nominated to play in the upcoming Division 1A All-State game.
The team’s other post-season honorees (all second team All-League) are:
— Mike Ausilio, senior, defensive back.
— Dalton Baker, senior, defensive line.
— Forrest Dayton, senior, wide receiver and defensive back.
— Ryan Guard, senior, linebacker.
— Justin James, senior, defensive line.
— Calen Mehrer, senior, offensive line and linebacker.
— Brett Paul, freshman, place kicker.
— Micah Powell, sophomore, running back.
— Niko Roiko, junior, tight end and punter.
— Roy Taylor, junior, running back.
