“Viking power” filled the gymnasium during the beginning of Friday night’s game against Orcas on Jan. 12, but the Friday Harbor Wolverine’s took their victory during the final seconds of the game.
At the end of the first quarter, the score was 7-11, the Orcas Vikings taking the lead. The Vikings scored another 11 points in the second quarter giving them a stronger lead, with a score of 12-22 going into halftime. The third quarter remained in favor of the Vikings, who scored 6 points while the Wolverines scored 4.
Intensity peaked in the fourth quarter when the Wolverines caught up to the Vikings. With 2:30 on the clock, the Wolverines were trailing the Vikings by two points, with an overall score of 28-30. At just under 1:30 on the clock, the Wolverines took the lead. Orcas quickly took back their lead with a 2 point shot, and it wasn’t until a basket made during the final buzzer when the Wolverines claimed victory. The final score was 34-33.
This victory follows two losses for Friday Harbor, one against LaConner on Jan. 9, 22-34. The other defeat was the Jan. 6 game against Overlake, 29-35. Six games remain in the season. The next game is away on Tuesday, Jan. 16 against Mount Vernon Christian. The next home game is Friday, Jan. 19 against Darrington.
