That the undefeated Friday Harbor Wolverines would win the League Championship at par-71 San Juan Golf and Country Club, there was little doubt.

But Friday Harbor’s golfers weren’t taking Thursday’s match for granted. Not with the mercury at 49 degrees, not with a chilly breeze blowing in from Griffin Bay, not with rain making the outing a soggy one.

Even Jordyn Taylor’s 78 was not his best game, but it was good enough for first place. What the Wolverines did was what they do best — persevere. Shake off the elements like you’d shake off a missed birdie putt.

At the end of the day, the Wolverines walked away with their umpteenth league title, scoring 411 to Orcas’ 451 and La Conner’s 537.

Friday Harbor senior Dustin Howard, on his rookie year on the Wolverine squad, was second with 79. Henri Bredouw of Orcas and Friday Harbor’s Cody Price tied for third with 80.

Friday Harbor sophomore Megan Cuomo took first place in the girls draw with a 105, one stroke ahead of La Conner’s Zoe Waldron. Maddie Smith of Orcas took third with 112.

Price won the longest-drive competition by crunching a 325-yard drive on the No. 13 hole. Cuomo won that competition in the girls match with a 225-yard drive on the No. 13 hole.

Bredow earned closest-to-the-pin honors by leaving an approach shot 4 feet 3 inches from the pin on the No. 17 hole. The Vikings’ Tyler Diepenbrock took second with a 5 foot 8 inch approach shot on No. 17.

Taylor was unavailable for comment today; he’s playing in the Bill Egbers Invitational Tournament at Skagit Golf and Country Club.

Next, the Wolverines (8-0) close out the regular season vs. Whatcom schools on May 14 at par-72 Homestead Farms Golf Resort in Lynden. The Tri-District Tournament is May 19 at Fort Lewis. The State Tournament is May 27-28 at Richland.
