Freshmen Micky Leytze and Mandy Turnbull gave the Wolverines a shot to win with a turnaround performance and 7-6 victory in the second set Friday on the road at Coupeville.

But the outcome of last week’s showdown between the regional 1A rivals has yet to be decided. The match, knotted at 2-2, was postponed because of travel-related time constraints and, with that pivotal No. 3 doubles’ clash tied at one set apiece, will resume on May Day.

Junior Hannah Snow and Jenny Dunn, a sophomore, prevailed in back-to-back tie-breakers to clinch a nail-biter in two sets in No. 1 doubles. They took the first tiebreaker by a score of 11-9 and the second at 7-5, to seal the match (7-6, 7-6).

In No. 1 singles, Rebecca Leff dropped the first set 6-4 and rallied to take the next two, 6-4 and 7-2, and the match.

Coupeville evened the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win by Jordan Akins in No. 2 singles and a 6-2, 6-3 victory by Jessica Blanchette and Lexi Hemphill in No. 2 doubles.

In the No. 3 doubles showdown, Turnbull and Leytze rebounded from a 7-5 first-set loss to claim the second set at 7-6, thanks to a decisive 7-0 shutout in the tie-breaker. The third and final set of the match will be played when the two teams meet on May 1 at Coupeville.

Next: The Wolverines are at home today to host Division 2A Blaine, beginning at 4:15 p.m. They are on the road Friday at Division 2A Granite Falls and return home Saturday to host Darrington, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
