The Friday Harbor girls soccer team clinched the Northwest 1A/2B championship Thursday, defeating Orcas at home 3-0.

Fifth-year coach Mark Fishaut believes it’s the first title in the program’s history — if not the first in its history, the first in Fishaut’s career and the first in recent memory.

The Wolverines are now 8-0 league, 9-3 overall. Thursday’s game was the last home appearance for the team and for seniors Whitney Porter and Ingrid Carlson. And the Wolverines didn’t disappoint.

The first half ended 0-0. But sophomore Elle Guard opened the second half with a goal. Sophomore Clara Brand scored goal No. 2 then set up the third and final goal by freshman Mandy Turnbull. Junior goalkeeper Hannah Snow chalked up her fourth shutout of the season.

“Hannah will be a college-level goalkeeper if she wants to be,” Fishaut said. “She’s really smart and physically gifted.”

Fishaut said his team’s performance this season is a reflection of youth soccer play the girls had before high school, as well as a pre-season camp with Eastern Washington University coaches, and an intense fitness and injury prevention program.

“We are the fittest team in the league, and it’s not by chance alone,” Fishaut said. The players don’t seem to tire, “and that’s why we’ve been able to dominate the second half throughout the season.”

Next: Oct. 23, the Wolverines travel to Mount Vernon Christian, 4 p.m.

Oct. 25 at 1 p.m., the Wolverines face non-league Seattle Christian, perennially one of the best teams in the state.

The Wolverines close the regular season Oct. 27, 4 p.m. at Concrete. On Oct. 29, they head to the District 1 playoffs vs. Coupeville, at Coupeville.
