Outgunned and out-of-synch, the Friday Harbor girls basketball team suffered its third loss of the season Tuesday at home in a deflating 56-19 defeat at the hands of Division 2A Mount Baker High.

The Mountaineers led from start to finish and, after outscoring Friday Harbor 21-4 in the third period, cruised to victory in a match up between non-conference rivals. Tenacity on the defensive end kept the Wolverines within striking distance in the first half and they went into the locker room down by 12 points at the break.

But despite having home court advantage, Friday Harbor, coming off a two-week layoff, never found its rhythm on the offensive end and fell further behind as the Mountaineers turned a flurry of second-half miscues into uncontested lay ups. The Wolverines, with only 19 points for the game, set a mark for futility from the field and its lowest scoring total of the season.

“We were flat-out overmatched,” Friday Harbor Head Coach Eric Jangard said. “We just were not clicking at all today and that’s a bad place to be against an athletic group like they have.”

Mount Baker improved to 2-4 overall. A total of 10 Mountaineers, led by freshman guard Lauren Frey’s game-high 10, put points on the board. Junior Kristen Frey and senior guard Brandi Anderson pumped in eight points a piece, and guard Kelsey Copps and forward Erika Yost each had seven.

Friday Harbor senior forward Meaghan McCormick scored a team-high eight points and sophomore Maggie Anderson added five, all from the free-throw line. Though sophomore Kelsey Barnes led the team in rebounds and blocked several shots, she was limited to four points by a suffocating Mountaineers’ defense.

The Wolverines tumbled to 0-3 overall, but can bag their first, and possibly second, win of the season with back-to-back home games beginning Friday against Coupeville; tipoff is 6 p.m.

On Saturday, the Nooksack Valley Pioneers, led by junior Erika Ramstead, come to town for a clash between Northwest 1A District rivals; game time is noon.
