What a season it has been for Friday Harbor FC.
This year over 200 kids registered for soccer, consisting of boys and girls, 5-16 years old. Younger players, 9 and under, played on the island against each other, while our 10-year-olds and up participated in the Skagit Valley Youth Soccer Association. The SKVYSA league consists of teams from Burlington, Mount Vernon, La Conner, Sedro-Woolley, and Conway.
This year five of the traveling teams participated in the Nov. 4 league playoffs at Skagit River Park in Burlington. Friday Harbor teams played hard, showed great attitude, strong sportsmanship, and a competitive fire. This was the first year the organization had two boys, under age 14 teams. Both won their playoff games in an exciting (and nail-biting!) penalty kick shootout, which advanced them to the championship game against each other. It made cheering during that final match easy – Go Friday Harbor!
The FH under 14 boys coached by Tito Bayas and Humberto Orozco defeated the boys’ under 14 team coached by Sean Parsons and Floyd Bourne 3-1. The Bayas/Orozco team ended the season as champions in their division with an undefeated record. The Parsons/Bourne team finished a respective second.
The girls’ under 14 team coached by Randy Martin and Ed Tucker played Burlington-Edison -Skagit Bank and finished third in the league.
The under 11 girls, coached by Bryan Leighton, lost to Conway-Cooley/Shand and finished fourth in their division.
Coached by Missy Martin and Scott Zehner, the girl’s under 12 team was victorious over Burlington-Edison Vanderpol Electric to place third in their division.
FHFC is proud of all the players, coaches and parents who contribute to the strength of the program, with hard work and dedication. We also thank all of our many volunteers who helped make our season possible.
FHFC looks forward to continuing our success next year in our 2018 season. Have a child interested in soccer? Be sure to check out the program with Island Rec this winter.
This indoor soccer program is great in developing technical skills in a smaller space and faster pace. Interested in coaching? Reach out to a board member or visit fridayharborfc.org for more information. Reach out to players and coaches and congratulate them on a successful and fun season! Go FHFC!
