The Friday Harbor Wolverines stepped on the gas in the second period and ran away with a season-opening 67-28 win Dec. 4 at South Whidbey.
Knotted at nine points each at the end of the first quarter, Friday Harbor outscored the Falcons by 10 in the pivotal second period and led 27-17 going into the locker room at the half. The Wolverines landed the knock-out punch after the break, tallying 22 points in the third period while holding the home team to just three.
It’s the second time in two years the Wolverines (1-0) opened the season with a victory over South Whidbey, a Division 2A team, which fell to 0-3.
Senior Maggie Andersen and junior Liz Taylor combined for 38 points and together put up more points than the entire South Whidbey squad managed in 48 minutes of play. Andersen tossed in 24 points to lead all scorers and Taylor tallied 14. Senior low-post player Kelsey Barnes contributed nine points to the cause and point-guard Mandy Turnbull added six. Senior Elle Guard, a perennial All-League performer in soccer and softball, dropped in five points in her 2010-11 season debut.
Next: The Wolverines are in La Conner Dec. 8 and face Coupeville Dec. 11, noon, at home.
