Friday Harbor tallied four wins in a four-day, five-match whirlwind of tennis, thanks in large part to the steady play of its doubles teams.
Trailing 2-0 after successive losses in singles, junior Hannah Snow and sophomore Jenny Dunn paced a comeback at home against division 2A Granite Falls Saturday with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 victory in No. 1 doubles.
Sophomores Madi McPadden and Shanti Neff-Baro seized on the momentum to prevail 6-3, 7-5 in No. 2 doubles, and freshman Micky Leytze and Rebecca Leff hung on for a 6-1, 7-5 win in the No. 3 doubles slot to clinch the match.
Later that day, the Wolverines downed Darrington for the second time in four days with a 3-2 victory, only this time at home.
Friday Harbor prevailed 4-1 at Darrington on Aug. 22. Leff defeated the Loggers’ Milli Strong 6-0, 6-1 to claim the No. 2 singles match, while Dunn and Snow cruised 6-1, 6-0 in No. 1 doubles. McPadden and Neff-Baro sealed the victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win in No. 3 doubles.
The Wolverines were swept in five straight matches Thursday at home by Division 2A Blaine, but rebounded the following day to tally a 3-2 victory on the road at Granite Falls.
Leff survived a three-set nail-biter, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5, to post the first win in No. 1 singles, while Snow and Dunn claimed the No. 1 doubles match with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory over Granite Falls’ Marissa Ogren and Breanna White. Neff-Baro, joined by junior Alex MacDonald, sealed the match with a decisive 6-4, 6-4 victory in No. 3 doubles.
