Four Friday Harbor Wolverines named to 2008-09 Northwest 1A/2B All-League teams

Four Friday Harbor Wolverines were named to 2008-09 Northwest 1A/2B Boys and Girls All-League basketball teams. Four others received honorable mentions. The selections were announced Thursday. Austin Scheffer, a senior guard, was named to the boys All-League first team.

The selections were announced Thursday.

Austin Scheffer, a senior guard, was named to the boys All-League first team. He joins Jason Vermeer, senior guard, Shoreline Christian; Jeremy Vander lei, senior center, of La Conner, Chris Smith of Concrete, Mike Parris, senior center and forward, of Darrington; and Cory Hoveskeland, senior guard, of Darrington.

Named to the second team were Ryan Aylward, senior guard; and Jordan Nash, senior guard and forward.

Receiving honorable mentions were Parker Lawson, junior center; and Pablo Lopez, senior forward.

Vander lei was named Player of the Year. Scott Novak of La Conner was named Coach of the Year. Mount Vernon Christian received the league’s Sportsmanship Award.

Stephanie Shaw, a junior guard of Orcas High School, was named to the girls All-League first team.

Kelsey Barnes, sophomore center of Friday Harbor, was named to the second team.

Brooke Jangard, senior guard of Friday Harbor, and Maggie Anderson, sophomore forward of Friday Harbor, received honorable mentions. Other islanders receiving honorable mentions: Orcas High School’s Anika Thomas, senior center; Sydney Harris, senior forward; and Maddy Smith, senior forward.

Hailey Wales of Darrington was named Player of the Year. Terry Moran-Hodge of Orcas was named Coach of the Year. Darrington won the league Sportsmanship Award.
