Glenwood Springs Salmon Hatchery on Orcas Island is seeking interested salmon anglers to help improve understanding of fish distribution in the region.
Save the heads of the hatchery salmon you keep and contact Mike O’Connell at Glenwood Springs to participate in the research project. A portion of all hatchery salmon are implanted with a tiny coded wire tag that is injected into their snouts when they are juveniles. Valuable information can be gained by recovering the tags from the heads of sport caught adult salmon.
If you are interested in participating, the hatchery needs the heads from the fish, the approximate location where harvested and the date caught. If the fish has a tag, the hatchery will get back to you with information on what hatchery the salmon originated from and when it was released into the marine environment.
