Forget about a repeat of last season’s undefeated run through the regular season.

Concrete rebounded from a 9-0 loss in the opening game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Hartman Field and dealt the Wolverines a decisive 9-1 defeat in the sequel.

Concrete’s Trent Kitchen kept Friday Harbor bottled up at the plate — and the Lions out in front — by striking out 14 batters and scattering three base hits over seven innings.

Leading 2-0 after four, Concrete added five more runs in the fifth in taking command of the contest.

It’s the first loss of the season for Friday Harbor and, according to Head Coach Rich Warin, a bona-fide wake-up call for a team that had amassed mind-blowing numbers by feasting on lesser competition. The Wolverines outscored their first seven opponents by a combined score of 106-9 and were undefeated, at 7-0, going into Saturday’s doubleheader.

“Concrete’s a good team and we really hadn’t seen much competition,” Warin said. “It’s probably the ugliest game we’ve ever played, but I think it shows that we might not be as good a team as we think we are.”

The Wolverines (7-1 league, 8-1 overall) are tied with Concrete at the top of the Northwest 1A/2B League standings. The Lions will host Friday Harbor April 21 in what now stands as the deciding game of a three-game series between league rivals.

The loss also overshadowed senior Richie Ochoa’s dominating performance on the mound in the opener. Ochoa struck out 13 Lions, tossed seven innings of shutout ball without giving up a walk, and allowed just two base hits en route to a 9-0 win.

“That’s the best game I think he’s pitched in a long time,” Warin noted.

The Wolverines grabbed an early lead in the opener and junior Parker Lawson blasted a three-run homer in the sixth inning to cap the victory.

Next: The Wolverines host Granite Falls, a Division 2A team, Friday, 4:30 p.m. at Hartman Field. They travel to Orcas Saturday for a league doubleheader against the Vikings, beginning at 2 p.m.
