Friday Harbor’s Devon Rousar didn’t dally in punching her ticket to post-season play.

In the face of gale force winds, the Friday Harbor High School sophomore bested Monday’s burly breeze and bitter cold to shoot a 58 over nine holes and to secure a spot in the District 1A tournament, as the Wolverines golf team hosted league rival La Conner at San Juan Golf & Country Club.

Golfers in the women’s field must notch a score of 60 or under to qualify for the district tournament. Monday’s home match is only the second of the season for the Wolverines.

“We are really proud of her and look forward to steady improvement,” Coach Jack Rice said of Rousar in a post-match press release.

Among the men, junior Riley Rousar (Devon’s brother) turned in the low score for the Wolverines, notching a 43 over nine holes. Rice predicts that Rousar will be able to shave more than a couple strokes off Monday’s team-best number as the season progresses.

“…once he gets a little more confidence and experience under his belt I’m sure we’re going to sees scores in the 30s,” Rice said.

First-year player Christo Bolger, who fell off the pace early with a 10 on hole No.1, rallied over the next eight holes to tally a 51. Brandon Erickson, also in his first year on the team, notched a 51 as well. Freshman Xander Chrichton and Matt Stepita shot 58 and 68, respectively.

A veteran La Conner team won the match with the Braves top two boys players finishing the match with sub-40 scores, and with four others netting scores below the 50 mark.

Friday Harbor sophomore standout Kendra Meeker, a state 1A tournament qualifier a year ago, is expected to be back in the lineup for the Wolverines March 27 match on the road at Lopez.
