The rest of the field battled over the leftovers as two of San Juan’s top golfers carried their team to victory in the second annual Gobbler Classic, Saturday at the San Juan Golf and Country Club.

Club pro Darren Black and club manager Bryan Germain, along with teammates Jaime Rice and Van Watkins, took first place in this year’s pre-Thanksgiving Day tournament by shooting a team net total of 54 over 18 holes.

Each member of the team pocketed a cool $94 thanks to the win.

There was little margin for error, however, as Black and company were saddled with the lowest team-handicap of the tournament. And they claimed the title by outshooting this year’s runner-up by just two strokes. Hector Cyre, Chance Earle, Greg Earl and Richard Goff shot a combined net total of 56 to clinch second place by one stroke. Each member of that team earned $56 for the second-place finish. Two teams tied for third place.

The classic features a traditional scramble format, wherein each member of the team tees off individually and then, after a best shot is selected, each player takes their next shot from that location. Teams also compete with a collective handicap, which is determined by averaging the handicap of each player. Par for the 18-hole course is 71.

The second annual Gobbler Classic drew 43 players, divided among seven teams, who braved cold and windy conditions for a chance to compete in Saturday’s tournament, the final competition of the year hosted by the club.

The classic also features individual events folded into the team competition. Ron Kenny took home longest-putt honors by sinking a 48-footer on the No. 9 hole, while Bob Wingate left an approach shot 3 feet 41/2 inches from the cup to earn K.P. — closest to the pin — honors on No. 6. Mark Forselius, Jerry Greene and Nancy Tracy earned K.P. honors as well with respective approach shots on the No. 8, No. 15 and No. 17 holes.
