Led by Rich Warin, Steve Schramm and Justin Nibler, the Friday Harbor High School baseball team is gearing up for a great season.
The team is excited to get back on the field for the upcoming season. Most of these players are coming on the field as newer players within high school baseball. “I am excited to get back on the field after taking a few years off. I played last year and now I am playing this year, but I took freshman and sophomore year off of playing baseball,” Geoffrey Volk, senior recalls.
A common goal across the players is to make it to state this year. Going to state is the overarching goal for this team, but they all are hoping to win most of their games, and overall perform to the best of their ability. Many of the players are looking forward to spending quality time with their friends, on the field where it counts. “I am looking forward to lifting the spirits of my team and striving to be the best player that I can be, for myself and my teammates,” Elliot Samonas, junior player, said.
Warin and Schramm have been coaching together for 20-plus years. The coaching duo has molded and shaped many wonderful teams as well as guiding these boys into young men. Senior player Jaxson Waldron notes “The coaching staff has been nothing but great to me, always providing feedback for me to succeed as a baseball player and grow as a young man.”
The first home game took place on March 15 at Linde Field against Meridian High School. The boys played a really great game, despite losing 10-0.
The Wolverines baseball team is preparing to face their on-going rival, Coupeville. The district games and state games are in their view and they are all preparing to meet that goal. Working as a team and learning from each other, is going to be their key to success. With the help and guidance of their coaches, these goals are within reach.
“Baseball is a metaphor of life, it is a game of failure. You deal with every pitch every time you’re up to bat. Sometimes you strike out and sometimes you hit a home run,” Schramm said. Good luck to the Wolverines baseball team this season. See it. Dream it. Achieve it!
