Add another game to the winning streak.
The San Juan Dragons defeated the Skagit Valley Flyers 10-3 Tuesday at Skagit River Park, boosting their record to 4-2. They are one game behind conference leader Mukilteo.
Skagit Valley fell to 0-5.
Team scoring leader Forest Dayton led the Dragons’ offense with four goals, three assists and four ground balls. Kyle Skoog scored three goals and had one ground ball. Alex Michael scored two goals, had one assist and scooped up five ground balls. Conner Johns scored one goal and scooped up eight ground balls. Ryan Guard had one assist and three ground balls.
Michael Ausilio contributed to the defense with four ground balls; Michael Davis, one; Dylan Galligan, five; Anci Melic, one; Nils Nelson, four; Cameron Paterson, one; Mike Short, one; Brady Sundberg, four; and Cody West, one.
Goalie Calen Mehrer had nine saves in 12 shots on goal. His Skagit Valley counterpart Tyler Tarabochia was busier, taking 29 shots from the Dragons and notching 19 saves.
According to Skagit Valley Coach Gregg Hill, his young team had its best start of the season, scoring the game’s first goal and going into halftime down 3-2 — a vast improvement over the Flyers and Dragons’ first meeting March 24, which San Juan won 9-0.
“San Juan came out more settled in the second half and took control with four third-quarter goals,” Hill reported. “San Juan moved the ball well and had quality finishes en route to the win. Congratulations to the Dragons on the victory and good luck the rest of the season.”
San Juan Coach Rob Cuomo was impressed by Skagit Valley’s improvement. “Skagit Valley came out ready to play and scored first. Skagit continued to fight hard, and the score was 3-2 San Juan at the half. San Juan finally found some rhythm on offense and pulled away in the second half.”
Cuomo said the Dragons’ game against Whatcom (3-1) will be a test to see where San Juan will be for the rest of the season. The game is Saturday, 5 p.m., at Shuksan Middle School.
The Dragons host Stanwood (3-2) on April 23, 5 p.m.; and Lynnwood (2-2 conference, 5-3 overall) on April 25, 2 p.m. Lynnwood will be a test; the Dragons lost 12-5 to Lynnwood at Shoreline Soccer Fields March 18. The Dragons were off to a shaky start and played on AstroTurf, a faster surface than the Dragons are accustomed to playing on.
“It will be good to play them at home,” Cuomo said. “First of all, we’ll have our fans, and we love our fans. And the grass field — it’s better suited for our game.”
Notebook: Senior attackman Isaac Taylor will play Saturday against Whatcom, Coach Rob Cuomo reported today. Taylor, who made the WHSBLA’s Top 50 in points and points per game last season, has been out with an ankle sprain sustained playing indoor lacrosse.
