Senior Kayla Short and junior Kelsey Barnes are headed back to State with a pair of first-place finishes at Tri-District.

They will be joined by freshman Jadyn Slack.

All three finished among the top six in their respective events last week at Tri-District to advance to the state 1A Track and Field Tournament, which begins May 28 at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

Short took first place in javelin with a throw of 109 feet 4 inches. Slack’s throw of 108 feet 8 inches proved good enough for a third-place finish and a berth at State as well.

“Kayla and Kelsey have been there before and this is Jadyn’s first time,” Head Coach Darrin Scheffer said. “That’s pretty good for a freshman.”

In shot put, Barnes set a personal best of 34 feet 5 inches, good enough for first place and a return to State in that event.

The Friday Harbor track and field team bested its mark of a year ago as 13 Wolverines qualified for Tri-Districts this year. Nine Wolverines competed in the regional showdown in 2009.

Several Wolverines just missed joining Short, Barnes and Slack at State. Junior Wilson Schubert notched a personal best in the 800 meters, crossing the finish line in 2:03.77 — a fraction of a second off the school record set a year ago by Otto Schmidt. But Schubert, who finished eighth, fell short of a State berth by three seconds.

Junior Maverick Blake and freshman Aaron Prager tied for ninth in the high jump, along with 10 others. Junior Kia Johns just missed the high jump cut as well, finishing 10th overall.

The girls’ 4 x 200 relay team also just missed making the cut, finishing ninth overall at 1:52.22.
