The gates to Valhalla opened wide to welcome Robert Oscar Christianson on October 1, 2024. Bob lived his life with a spunky attitude, a smile always on his face and with a quirky sense of humor.
Born in Chicago, Bob moved to Spokane at an early age. He enjoyed a “Leave it to Beaver” childhood. Lovingly raised by his parents Alice and Oscar Christianson, who modeled a strong set of values. Together with his sister Karen, Bob grew up in a close-knit family that enjoyed traveling, fishing, skiing and spending summers on Orcas Island. He attended Hutton School and Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane and was a proud graduate of Whitman College.
Bob’s passion for life meant he never needed a bucket list. He was an excellent downhill and cross country skier and an avid climber, summiting numerous peaks in the Pacific Northwest and major peaks in Europe. He found peace in the outdoors and had an inquisitive mind, delving into genealogy, history, poetry and geology. Proud of his Swedish and Norwegian heritage, Bob was famous for his Scandinavian dinners and his moves on the dance floor, often lamenting that his one regret was not becoming a professional dancer.
Bob and his wife, Carol Christianson, shared many adventures including hiking trips in Europe and the US. Bob and Carol also lived out their dream of living on San Juan Island for 25 years, where they built their home, sailed, hiked, worked and loved their island community.
Bob was always a contributor to his community, serving as an active volunteer for many organizations. A natural leader, he usually started as a volunteer, eventually ending up president of the board. He especially enjoyed many years as a volunteer with the animal shelters.
“Chris” (Bob’s name in his professional life) had a successful career in advertising, public relations and marketing. He had the innate ability to make people comfortable, laugh and trust him. He was also creative, and known to think outside the box.
He lived a rich life, blessed with loving and dedicated friends and family, a strong marriage and a life filled with adventures. He will be deeply missed by all, especially “his bride” Carol and his dog Toby. Special thanks for the tender loving care provided by Golden Horizon Adult Family Home, and heartfelt gratitude to Serghei, Nina, and Elena. The staff at Horizon Hospice also provided Bob with dignity, laughter, and love.
Bob is survived by his wife Carol, his sister Karen Kratter, brother-in-law David Kratter and his nephews Mark and Matthew Kratter, who adored their Uncle Beagle.
At Bob’s request there will be a small gathering at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Animal Protection Society Friday Harbor, Spokanimal or Guide Dogs for the Blind.
