Robert W. Hutton died peacefully at home in Seattle on Jan. 5. He was 88. Bob was a native of the Northwest, a member and supporter of numerous local civic organizations, a successful business executive and a dedicated husband and father. With his wife Charlotte, Bob lived much of his life in the Seattle area, in addition to 25 years in Greenwich, Conn.
Johan Elias (Johnny) Moe passed away Jan. 7, 2010 at the age of 81. He was born in Seattle, Wash., to Elias and Dagne Moe on Jan. 29, 1928 and grew up in Mount Vernon and Stanwood, graduating from Twin City High School in Stanwood. Johnny played football in high school but excelled in music, playing the coronet. He formed Johnny Moe and His Orchestra in Snohomish and entertained in Washington for many years.
Thomas Martin Smythe passed away early morning Jan. 6, 2010 after a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer. He was 42.
Mary Jane Leche, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, died at her home in Friday Harbor, Wash. on Jan. 5, 2010. She was 80. In memory and thanksgiving for the life of Mary Jane, a Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 at 2 p.m. at St. David’s Episcopal Church, Friday Harbor. Graveside service will be conducted at Breidablik Cemetery in Poulsbo.
Gary J. McKay Sr. was born on Jan. 2, 1936 in Friday Harbor, Wash., and passed away on Jan. 4, 2010 in Bellingham, Wash. He was 74. Gary was the great-grandson of Charles McKay, who first raised the U.S. flag on San Juan Island after British troops left in 1872.
Anna Belle Volk died peacefully in her sleep at Mountain Glen Retirement Home in Mount Vernon, Wash., where she has lived for the past several years.
A resident of San Juan Island since 1989, Virginia died on Dec. 14, 2009 at Islands Convalescent Center after a brief battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, at St. David’s Episcopal Church.
Nanette Robinson Weissinger died Friday, Dec. 11, at Islands Convalescent Center in Friday Harbor, after a short and unexpected hospitalization. She was 90. She had lived in Friday Harbor for the past 10 years.
Artist Marsha Rachlin died Dec. 8, 7:25 p.m. in a care center next to Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon. She was 72 and had been battling cancer. An obituary is forthcoming. A memorial celebration of her life will be held in February in the American Legion hall. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the new Island Artisans Endowment Fund, which will fund scholarships for graduating high school seniors.
Thomas Elton Hartman, loving father and friend, son of Glen E. and Mary Lee Hartman, lived Nov. 14, 1931 to Nov. 30, 2009. Throughout his life, he had a passion for automobiles, airplanes, and motorcycles. He graduated with a masters in engineering physics from the University of Oklahoma in 1956, where he was president of Phi Kappa Sigma and voted “Big Man on Campus.”
Lawrence Theodore “Larry” Brewster was born on Nov. 29, 1925 in Mount Vernon, Wash., to George Theodore and Vera Goldie (Guinn) Brewster.
He passed on Nov. 27, 2009 after a vigorous battle with cancer. He was two days shy of his 84th birthday.
Amanda Cartmill Cruz passed into her heavenly father’s hands unexpectedly on Nov. 12 at her home. She was 33. Born at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton, Wash., on Sept. 7, 1976, she is the only daughter of Edward and Catherine Cartmill, now residents of La Conner, Wash.
Richard J. Louden of Friday Harbor, Wash., went to the Lord on Nov. 7, 2009. He was 84. He passed at the Island Convalescents Center in Friday Harbor with his wife Gloria, son Jeffrey and his wife Claudia, and niece Diane Buganski at his side. Diane and her sister, Donna Burton, were regular bedside visitors who provided limitless care and support to the family.
