Joyce Christine Morrill Gaylard, beloved mother and wife, went home to be with her Lord. Joyce “Tiss” was born to Calvin Clare Morrill and Betty Mae Blanchard-Tate on Nov. 11, 1948 in her maternal great-grandparents’ home off of Sutton Road in Friday Harbor. She passed away March 6, 2010 after a long illness.
Gwen went quietly and peacefully in her sleep. She was 72. She was the first of two daughters born to Hazel and Howard Lawson of Friday Harbor.
Margaret “Peg” Wilson, a long-time resident of Cape San Juan, died Feb. 24 in Oregon, where she had moved a few years ago to be closer to her daughter. She was 92.
Byron E. Harrell passed away from pneumonia in Island Hospital on Jan. 23, 2010. He was born in St. Paul, Minn., and attended the University of Minnesota. After serving in World War II, he took courses in vertebrate paleontology at the University of Michigan, where he met and married Joyce.
Theodore Paul Lehn was a lover of life, father, husband, brother, son, and friend, architectural designer and builder, finish carpenter, environmentalist, volunteer, world traveler, gardener, and gourmet cook.
Frances Josephine (Mickey) Cahail passed away Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, in the Islands Convalescent Center at the age of 100. She was born October 21, 1909, south of Friday Harbor near Madden’s Corner to Julius Oscar Bergman and Mary Ellen (Madden) Bergman. She was the third of five children.
Rosary will be recited Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. and Mass will be celebrated Feb. 20, 11:30 a.m., in St. Francis Church in Friday Harbor for Frances “Mickey” Cahail. Mrs. Cahail died at 11:50 p.m. Feb. 12 in Islands Convalescent Center. She was 100.
Harriet Woodward Bauer died on Saturday, Feb. 6, in a Hospice House in Kirkland. Harriet and her ex-husband Wolf Bauer spent years on their property on San Juan Island, beginning in 1936 when Wolf was the chief engineer at Roche Harbor. They formed and entertained a kayak club who often met on the “Bauery.” This group still meets after 60 years.
Fredrick William Bourland Sr., a Friday Harbor resident and former general manager for Valmark, went home to be with his Lord and Savior following complications from radiation treatment for lung cancer.
He was 73. His life was a testimony of commitment to God, his wife, family and friends.
Kurt Daniel Johnson was born and raised in the community of Ballard in Seattle, Wash.
His love for the outdoors began with time spent at the family cabin on Lake Whatcom, at Camp Orkila, Cub Scouting and family camping trips. He climbed Mount Rainier and hiked all over the Cascades and the Olympic Mountains.
Shirley S. Potter passed away peacefully at home Jan. 31. Shirley was born in Two Rivers, Wis., in 1920. She graduated from Oshkosh Teachers College in 1942. She married Robert M. Potter in 1952. She taught in Wisconsin and Alaska until her retirement in 1974.
Susan Meredith, an early island kayaker, historical reenactor and frequent participant in the Fourth of July Parade, died Jan. 26. She was 91. “Susan Meredith of San Juan Island passed away peacefully on the evening of Jan. 26, 2010,” Ron Garner e-mailed on behalf of the family. “She has loved the San Juan Islands for most of her life and has been a resident and enjoyed living in the island community for 30 years. She was 91. An obituary will follow when available.”
Ann Pullman had lived in Friday Harbor, Wash., for 20 years with her husband, Wayne, and son Michael and daughter Michelle (Shelley). Ann was born to Geraldine and John Mahoney, and was later joined by her brother, John M. Mahoney. She earned a B.S. in English from Loyola University in Chicago, Ill., where she also taught English. Ann then earned her pre-med degree from Seattle University. She was working as a respiratory therapist in Orange County, Calif., when she met her husband, J. Wayne Pullman. Ann and Wayne married July 4, 1974, in Los Angeles, Calif. She owned and operated a dessert catering business in Beverly Hills, Calif., for eight years, and a gourmet food shop and deli in Ojai, Calif., before moving to Friday Harbor in 1989.
