Shannon Leigh Smith passed away May 11, 2010, at the age of 35. She was a professional caregiver and a 1994 graduate of Friday Harbor High School. Her loving passion was taking care of island children, and she was an active fund-raiser for various causes.
James Stephen Hogan, a retired judge and former trustee of Central Washington University, died May 10 at his home in Yakima. He was 86. He was a judge of the Municipal Court and Justice Court of Yakima Precinct and the City of Yakima. In 1977, he was appointed by Gov. Dixie Lee Ray to the Board of Trustees of Central Washington University, and served as Wapato Municipal Court judge. He served as Exalted Ruler of the Elks in 1982-83 and was a life member of the VFW, Eagles, Moose, Kiwanis, and Footprinters.
Dick worked for JC Penney for 28 years and “retired” in 1997. He truly embraced “retirement” life with Marcia by living on a boat in the San Juan Islands, owning and operating a small boat accessory business, and serving as outstation manager for the Seattle Yacht Club on Henry Island. Dick’s humor, quick wit, and genuine nature drew people to him. His eye rolls, wise cracks, and crooked smile will be missed by all.
On Tuesday, May 11, 2010, Hildegard Goss, 93, died of natural causes at Hamlet House on Lopez Island. She is survived by her nieces, Christine Dahl-Sesby of Friday Harbor, Patricia Topper of Emmitsburg, Md., and her nephew, Derek Valley of Olympia. She was predeceased by her husband of more than 60 years, William Goss; her sister, Lillie Ericsson; and her brother, Bertil Valley.
Jerry passed away peacefully in his home on May 10, 2010 surrounded by his wife LouAnne, daughters Tiffany and Ashley, and brother-in-law Paul Fantin. As a boy, Jerry and his family summered on San Juan Island. He decided then that he would someday raise his family here. Jerry and LouAnne married Dec. 30, 1983 in Seattle, WA. They moved their family to Friday Harbor in 1988.
Rodney Wayne Shippee died around April 29 in Friday Harbor. He was 63.
Born Aug. 10, 1946 in Turlock, Calif. Graduated Turlock High School 1964, attended Modesto Junior College, U.S. Air Force veteran (16 months in Korea), graduated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 1974.
Ken “Dart” Malan, 78, retired Group Health physician, died from cancer on April 5, 2010 at Evergreen Hospice in Kirkland, Wash. He was born Aug. 21, 1931 in Ogden, Utah, son of Kennett H. Malan and Maureen Peck. He spent some of his happiest days working with his beloved grandpa, Gideon H. Malan, on their mountain, and with his lifelong friends from Polk Elementary, fondly referred to as “the sons of Polk.” He was on winning swimming and skiing teams at Ogden High School.
Robert “Bob” Sheldon Dixon passed peacefully on April 12, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Hospital after complications from a cardiac arrest. Bob was born in Seattle, Wash., on March 2, 1954. He graduated from Lake Washington High School in 1972. Bob moved to Friday Harbor in 1977. Bob was a skilled meat cutter for more than 30 years in Friday Harbor, employed by Verne Howard.
Laurence “Larry” Bauer died Tuesday, April 6, at Swedish Hospital, Seattle, from complications related to a severe stroke. His children, Sara and Laura, and their mother, Ingrid, were with him when he died. His death was peaceful. He was 69.
Albert Nash died peacefully at home on Monday morning, March 29, 2010. Albert lived most of his 86 years in Friday Harbor where he was born, the second child of Albert M. Nash Sr. and Margaret McSorley Nash. His brothers, Charles and Kenneth, preceded him in death. His sister, Catherine Herdt, lives in Mount Vernon with her husband, Gary.
C. James (Jim) Coughlin died on March 16, 2010, after a long illness. He was 71. Jim was born in Veblen, S.D., to Birinus (Jankord) and Edward Coughlin on Dec. 6, 1938. He lived most of his life in the Pacific Northwest, graduating from Seattle Prep and Seattle University, and obtaining his master of social work from the University of Washington in 1965.
Bonnie Peakes, secretary of the San Juan Historical Society and Museum and a former Friday Harbor Middle School teacher, died March 20 after a five-month battle with pancreatic cancer. According to the historical society, no funeral is planned. Her survivors include her son, John Peakes; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Scott Leeming; and grandson, William Leeming.
Carl Johnson passed away March 5 in Parker, Ariz. He was 80. He was born and raised in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. He was the son of Julius and Edna Johnson, both early pioneers of San Juan. Carl attended Friday Harbor schools. His sister Marlene Crosby and his brother Edward Johnson still live on San Juan Island.
