Edward “Ed” E. Strickland passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday January 26, 2022 at the age of 94 in Issaquah, Washington. Ed was born March 7, 1927 in Oregon City, Oregon to John and Suzanne Strickland. He grew up in Nebraska living and working on his grandmother’s family farm. Ed played football for the University of Nebraska before serving in the US Army during WWII. After the war, Ed completed his education at Creighton University, receiving his degree in Accounting. He later served in the Office of Special Investigations for the US Air Force during the Korean War. Ed worked for Minneapolis based Control Data from 1957 to 1986 serving as Treasurer & Senior Vice President. He also spearheaded the firm’s international operations which allowed his family to live in Switzerland and England. During his professional career and in retirement, Ed was a sought-after board member for many companies because of his no-nonsense business acumen. He also had a passion for helping raise start-up money for many other companies, most of which went on to become publicly traded. He attributed his professional successes to the values he learned growing up in Nebraska as a “poor farm boy”. Above all, Ed was a generous and kind person with a quick-witted sense of humor. He enjoyed traveling and the many summers spent boating with family and friends in the Pacific Northwest.
Ed was preceded in death by his sister Catherine (Pankonin). He is survived by his beloved spouse of 32 years, Margaret “Peggy”, his children, Scott (Teri), Nancy, Doug, step-children, Andrew (Kari), Emily (Chris), and proud Grandfather “Gramps” to Brittni, Taylor, Beckett, Reed, and Riley, Kelsey, Elliana, Miles & Sydney. The family is grateful to the staff for the care he received at Briarwood Health Center of Timber Ridge. A private celebration of Ed’s life will be held at a later date this summer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the San Juan Island Community Foundation, PO Box 1352, Friday Harbor, WA 98250.
