Long-time island resident Craig “Joseph” Garcia has found his freedom after a long challenge with cancer. He was 66. He passed on at home on January 5 attended by his loving friend, Deborah “Amara” Johnsen. His surviving siblings, Cezanne Garcia of Seattle, Celeste Garcia of Portland and Brian Garcia of San Francisco, were also on island to be with him. His family will hold a memorial in San Francisco in the spring.
Craig worked in the Maintenance Department at the Port of Friday Harbor for 22 years where he made a difference with his dedication and high standards. Remembered for his warm smile, friendliness, kindness and generosity, he will be missed by his co-workers, the community of harbor liveaboards he considered friends, and the wider island community. He touched many with his big heart.
He also brought his natural talent as a chef to the island with elaborate meals he made every week as a gift to Port staff and delicious pies and goodies for his friends at the Thrift House.
Craig adored cats. Donations in his name may be given to the Animal Protection Society of the San Juans.
Amara and Craig’s family are very grateful to Hospice of the Northwest for their kind and comprehensive support that made it possible for Craig to stay on the island he loved.
Craig, we all miss you! You cared.
