Fiber Courtyard events at the fair

Grab your yarn and grease your spinning wheel because the San Juan County Fair’s “Longest Yarn Contest” is coming up.

On Wednesday, Aug. 17, 1 p.m., entrants will be given an equal amount of wool and prizes will be awarded to those with the most yards spun.

Spinners of all abilities should come and test their hand.

This  year, the Fiber Courtyard also has special projects for young fairgoers.

On Thursday, Aug. 18, 11 a.m., participants  will make friendship bracelet. The SJ Textile Guild is still looking for help with this project from parents and grandparents.

Later that day, at 1 p.m. the guild’s  Basket Study Group is back. They will help fairgoers make their own small open baskets.

On Friday, Aug. 19, 10 a.m., you can paint a silk scarf with watercolors. Marta Specht and others will help you select the colors and designs. This program costs $3 and is limited to 72 participants.

At 2 p.m., youngsters can make yarn dolls. Then at 3 p.m. Julie Packard and master knitting friends will be at the courtyard to help you solve any and all knitting problems.

On Saturday, Aug. 20, the Speed Knitting Contest will be held during the lunch break of the Sheep to Shawl  Contest, which begins at 10 a.m.

The Knitting Contest is an opportunity for knitters to test their skills in a limited period of time.

Participants must bring their own yarn and needles. Prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Inside the Woodshed

A warped loom is avaible for weaving a rag rug, from Aug. 17 to 20.

On Thursday, Aug. 18, from 1 – 5p.m., Candy Hoeshcen will demonstrate with her antique sock knitting machine.
