Spring Street International School and San Juan Historical Museum are co-recipients of this year’s Town of Friday Harbor “Partners in Preservation” award.

Awards will be presented at Spring Street School at 5 p.m., Wednesday. The event is intended to show support for the valuable contributions made to the community by both organizations.

Since 2008, the San Juan Historical Museum has rehabilitated and restored five of the eight buildings on the museum campus. Projects include re-roofing four buildings, putting a new foundation under the James King House, and installing new siding and paint on other buildings.

Two wings were added to the existing barn, now home to the Museum of History & Industry – 2,700 square feet of educational exhibits that tell the story of the island’s early core industries: fishing, farming, logging and lime.

Spring Street International School encompasses two prominent residential properties on Spring Street – the Nash house built in 1905 and the circa 1890 Perry house. In 2012, working with the Historic Preservation Review Board and architect David Waldron, the school built new classrooms and a dormitory as part of its plan to develop a cohesive and attractive campus.

The Historic Preservation Review Board each year honors individuals or organizations that help preserve Friday Harbor’s historic buildings and sites. The 2014 preservation awards honor financial, architectural responses to challenges inherent  in historic rehabilitation and restoration.
