The Hiyu, which can carry up to 34 cars, joined the San Juan fleet Saturday, Oct. 8, after the Yakima, which carries up to 144 autos, was removed after maintenance crews found signs of abnormal wear and tear on the journal bearing of the Yakima. The bearing provides support for the boat’s propulsion shaft.
The Yakima, which carries up to 144 automobiles, was removed from service late last week for repairs.
