The ballots haven’t even been counted, yet we already have winners in the Nov. 8 election.
That’s what happens when candidates — incumbents as well as first timers — run unopposed.
At town hall in Friday Harbor, longtime treasurer Wendy Picinich earned another four-year term, while three town council members — Steve Husheback, Noel Monin and Barbara — gained four more years on the dais, each the beneficiary of an uncontested race.
Equally uncontested was Commissioner Albert Olsen of San Juan Island Fire Department, as was Barbara Marrett, also an incumbent, who earned another six-year term on the Port of Friday Harbor Commission.
At Island Rec, commissioners Bill Cumming, Tracy Roberson and Jeremy Talbott all glided into another public office, unopposed. The race for position No. 5 on the San Juan Island Park and Recreation Commission will be decided by voters, with a pair of first-time candidates Jacquelyn Reiff and Fred Schaller, competing for the that post.
Incumbents J. Michael Edwards, George Foster and Kerri Talbott all ran unopposed and were reelected, by virtue of uncontested races, to the San Juan Island Hospital District. Friday Harbor’s contribution to San Juan County’s Charter Review Commission was set at the end end of the candidate filing period, as Frank Penwell, Jim Stegall and Tom Starr filled all three of the position allotted to District 3, the legislative district — one of six — that encompasses the town.
While the fortunes of four candidates running for two positions on the San Juan Island School District’s board of the directors will be determined in Tuesday’s election, Jennifer Beck Furber earned her first-ever term on the school board in an uncontested race for position No. 4.
Incumbent Jim Cahail will be back to help guide San Juan Island Cemetery District No. 1, while Linda Erickson Bergquist of Stuart Island earned a post on San Juan Island Cemetery District No. 2, which encompasses Stuart Island, in an an uncontested race.
