The Friday Harbor Food Bank is asking help to recognize National Food Bank Day

Submitted by the Friday Harbor Food Bank

National Food Bank Day reminds us that food insecurity remains a significant problem in our society. According to the USDA, 44 million people, including 1 in 5 children, experience food insecurity. 49 million people rely on local food assistance programs to supplement their diet. No location is free of this problem: 100% of counties in the United States report some level of food insecurity.

Now in it’s 41st year, the Friday Harbor Food Bank works to assist those in need of healthy food options. We serve on average over 250 families per week and in the summer an additional 44 families with children who have participated in the Summer Nutrition Program. In addition to our open shopping days on Wednesday and Saturday, we offer an online program for islanders on Thursday. We help support our neighbors who receive Meals on Wheels. We work with the Master Gardeners and receive grant funds to support our local farming community.

Working together, we strive to assist those in need with healthy food options. The Friday Harbor Food Bank relies heavily on community donations to fund this important work. Your generosity makes it all possible! We are working to make donating easier by expanding our online presence to include Venmo.
