Thanks for the story regarding the Navy’s plans for increased overflights (“Learn about, and comment on, Navy plans,” page 6A, March 18 Journal). You bring up some important questions for the Navy to address.
My issues with the Navy’s aircraft are of a more aural and emotional nature. When visiting friends ask about that deep rumble coming from the south, I tell them it is Mount Doom. Sometimes the rumble morphs into a sinister bird shape high in the sky. Often, when the clouds hang low, the grim roar seems to threaten from just above the treetops.
To me, this is not the sound of freedom, but the guttural sound of oppression. In this time of change, we should expect fewer of these threatening sounds, not more.
