The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls:
May 17
• Lopez Island deputies and Lopez Island Fire and EMS responded to a report of a sunken vessel off the south end of Lopez. All four subjects aboard were rescued by a nearby boater who brought them to shore. The 21-foot boat sunk in 300 feet of water. A report was taken.
• An Orcas deputy noticed that the fenders on the patrol boat’s dock had been removed. An investigation is being conducted.
• A deputy was dispatched to a juvenile problem in Friday Harbor. A report was completed and forwarded to the juvenile office.
• Lopez Island deputies were sent to a family disturbance between a father and his adult son. Both parties indicated that only words had been exchanged. The parties willingly separated. A report was taken.
• A deputy spoke with a Lopez Island resident regarding a possible missing person complaint. The reporting person was concerned that he had not seen his friend for over two weeks and did not know his whereabouts. The deputy was able to confirm the person’s whereabouts. A report was completed.
• A Lopez deputy stopped a motorist in the 1700 block of Fisherman Bay Road and issued him a speeding ticket.
• A deputy was called to a single car accident near Eastsound. There were no injuries, but the driver was arrested for a DUI.
May 18
• An Orcas deputy responded to a report of a dog attacking and killing chickens. An investigation was conducted and the incident was settled by contact.
• Lopez deputies were flagged down by a Lopez resident. She asked the deputies to check into an illegally parked vehicle in Lopez Village. Deputies spoke with the owner of the vehicle, who agreed to move the vehicle and a report was taken.
• A Lopez Island deputy stopped a vehicle in the 2300 block of Fisherman Bay Road. The driver of the vehicle was cited for speeding.
• A deputy performed a traffic stop in Eastsound. The driver had a suspended license and was given a criminal citation for driving with a suspended license. The vehicle was driven away by a licensed driver.
• A Lopez Island deputy stopped a vehicle in the 4000 block of Fisherman Bay Road and issued a speeding ticket.
• A deputy was investigating a report of explosions in the rural area of San Juan Island. The deputy was unable to locate the source.
May 19
• A black pouch containing a metal tin was turned in by a citizen who had found it on West Side Road. Inside the tin was a glass smoking pipe and a small plastic bag containing a small amount of a crystalline substance. The substance was tested with a positive result to contain methamphetamines. There is no suspect information available at this time.
• An Orcas deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling 53 mph in a 35 mph. The driver was cited for speeding.
• A deputy conducted a traffic stop on a motorcycle traveling 55 mph in a 40 mph zone. The operator was cited for speeding.
• A Friday Harbor business owner reported trespassing. The trespasser was an employee, who has since been terminated. An investigation continues into whether it is criminal or civil in nature.
• A deputy issued a ticket to a motorist after he saw him driving in the Lopez Village while he was not wearing his seat belt.
• Friday Harbor deputies responded to a civil dispute over a housing situation. The homeowner was advised that he needed to formally evict the person who has been staying with him. The homeowner went to the courthouse to start the process. The tenant was advised not to cause any damage to the home.
• Lopez Island deputies were dispatched to a vandalism call on Hummel lake Road. An informational report was taken.
• The reporting deputy was dispatched to a dog at large in the San Juan Island area. The reporting deputy arrived, caught the dog and took it to the shelter. The owner was issued a warning letter.
• Lopez Island deputies were dispatched to a local marina for a non-injury boating accident. A witness of the accident pointed out the vessels involved and gave a written statement. A report was taken.
May 20
• Orcas deputies conducted a traffic stop in Eastsound on a vehicle for a defective headlight. The driver was cited for not having a license and insurance. A passenger with a valid and clear driver’s license was allowed to drive the vehicle from the scene.
• Orcas deputies stopped a vehicle in the 200 block of Mt. Baker Road for a defective rear tail light. The driver was issued a citation for driving with a suspended license in the third degree and an infraction for operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
• A deputy responded to a noise complaint in Eastsound. The property owner was contacted and informed of the county ordinance.
• A Lopez Island deputy responded to a report of a group of 10 bicyclists that had scaled the fence at Richardson Fuel and climbed onto the fuel tanks. They were gone when the deputy arrived.
• Orcas deputies responded to a report of a one vehicle accident with the vehicle in the ditch. After further investigation, it was determined that there was probable cause to arrest the occupant for physical control of a motor vehicle under the influence. The driver was processed, cited, and released.
• Deputies arrived at a traffic accident on the West Side of San Juan Island. The driver was transported to the hospital and later arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants.
• The reporting deputy was dispatched to an agency assist in the San Juan Island area. The reporting deputy responded and had contact with an intoxicated juvenile. A report on the incident was taken.
• A Lopez deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding. The driver, an Oregon resident, was issued an infraction.
May 21
• Deputies responded to the Deer Harbor area regarding a vehicle versus power transformer collision. Upon arrival, no persons were on the scene. Contact was made with a responsible party and the driver was uninjured. A collision report was completed.
• A deputy in Friday Harbor received a report of a vandalism. It was reported that someone had tipped over a large pot thus breaking it. Currently, there are no suspects.
• A Friday Harbor business owner reported the flag pole in front of his business had been pulled down and destroyed. It was okay the night before when he closed and he found it folded into several pieces in the morning. There are no suspects at this time.
• A Mercer Island woman reported the theft of her bicycle from outside a Lopez residence. The theft occurred sometime during the night. A report was taken.
• The reporting deputy was dispatched to the Friday Harbor area in reference to a disturbance. The reporting deputy arrived and contacted the involved parties. The investigation is ongoing.
• Orcas deputies responded to a residential burglary in progress in Olga. Officers arrived and detained two males. After further investigation, it was determined that it was a civil matter. A report was made.
• A Friday Harbor citizen came to the office to report vandalism. He claimed neighbors cut trees on his property. An investigation showed the property line is in dispute and there are court cases pending on this. The reporting party was advised to wait for the court resolution on the subject.
May 22
• A Lopez Island man was cited for having his dog running at large. The man had been repeatedly warned by neighbors and deputies and the dog continued to roam.
• Lopez Island deputies were called to investigate a minor injury traffic collision on Center Road at Lopez Sound Road. A southbound Honda was struck from behind by a Lopez Island Fire District fire engine. The fire engine was not responding to a call. The crash is under investigation.
• A deputy conducted a traffic stop in Eastsound. The driver was given a citation for speeding.
• Orcas deputies responded to a report of an accident with possible injuries. After further investigation, it was found that there were no injuries and only minor damage to the vehicle. Drivers information was exchanged and no collision report was needed.
• Lopez deputies took a report of a minor collision which occurred at the scene of a larger collision.
May 23
• The reporting deputy was dispatched to an unattended death that occurred in the Friday Harbor area. The reporting deputy arrived and conducted an investigation.
• A deputy was dispatched to a theft in Friday Harbor. A report was a taken and there is no further information at this time.
• A deputy was dispatched to an Eastsound business on a possible stolen tail light from a vehicle parked overnight. No evidence proved a theft occurred. A report was taken at their request.
• A deputy initiated a traffic stop in Friday Harbor, the driver was cited and released for driving while suspended in the first degree and issued an infraction for failing to wear a seat belt.
• A deputy initiated a traffic stop in Friday Harbor and issued the driver an infraction for failure to wear a seat belt and a warning for no proof of insurance.
