Doris Estabrooks, who led the successful campaign to ban styrene food containers in San Juan County, and Joyce Harrell, a 50-year member of the League of Women Voters, were honored at the local chapter’s annual meeting May 10 in the Orcas Hotel.
Estabrooks received the local chapter’s first annual Woman Who Made a Difference Award. Harrell was made a lifetime member.
Present were state Sen. Kevin Ranker, D-San Juan Island; House Speaker Pro Tem Jeff Morris, D-Mount Vernon; and Rep. Dave Quall, D-Mount Vernon.
The group installed its new board: Liz Illg, co-president; Ann Jarrell, co-president; Susan Dehlendorf, vice president; Pat Curtin, treasurer; and Beverly Zapalac, secretary.
Roger deRoos won a quilt in the raffle.
There are 20 new members and a new league unit is in the startup process on Orcas Island, Jarrell said.
Morris, Quall and Ranker fielded so many questions “that we had to stop the conversations when the restaurant needed to prep for the dinner hour,” Jarrell said. “It was truly illuminating.”
