Staging for the Spring Street Pocket Park project began Monday, Feb. 20. The contractor (Mike Carlson Enterprises) is preparing the site for installation of the Spring Street Pocket Park. The contractor is currently lowering the stormwater manhole located at the site.
A notice for construction of the Spring Street Pocket Park has been posted.
The Town anticipates three to five working days to complete this task. Construction of the Pocket Park is scheduled to begin on Monday, Feb. 27.
The contractor is authorized to work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. No construction is anticipated over the weekend. Equipment may be moved into barricaded areas each evening. The project site will be cleaned daily.
There was a partial street closure the week of Feb. 21. The lower southbound lane of Second Street (along Friday Harbor Drug Store) was closed to vehicle access during construction hours. The purpose of partial closure is to enhance pedestrian safety at the crosswalks and minimize vehicle congestion. A traffic plan will be published prior to construction of the Pocket Park.
The public is asked to stay within designated areas and follow posted signage for their personal safety. Access through the intersection and breezeway are as follows:
• Haleys to Kings Market Crosswalk: Open during and after construction hours.
• Kings Market to Friday Harbor Drug Store Crosswalk: Open during and after construction hours.
• Friday Harbor Drug Store to Palace Theatre: Closed during and reopened after construction hours.
• Sunshine Alley Breezeway: Access may be interrupted when the contractor needs the area for staging.
Some parking stalls will be used for pedestrian access to sidewalks. The majority of parking stalls on both sides of Spring Street will remain open for use.
There should be no utility service interruption for businesses.
Every effort will be made to limit closures, delays and noise from retrofitting the manhole. Questions regarding the project may be directed to town hall at 378-2810 or the on-site project manager. As always, the Town of Friday Harbor appreciates the continued patience of business owners, residents and visitors.
