Three plum, two pear and a split-rail fence now too.

There’s a new fence at the Heritage Orchard on Market Street thanks to a donation by San Juan Island National Historical Park. The split-rail fence was installed Feb. 28 by members of the Orchard Dream Team, a collaboration of the county Conservation District, Agricultural Resources Committee, National Parks and Friends of the San Juans.

The Heritage Orchard took root in 2009 with the planting of three plums trees and two pears trees in an grassy area next to the Friday Harbor Food Bank. The property is owned by the Mullis Senior Center.

Grafted from fruit trees believed to have been planted near English Camp in the 1860s, the plum and pear trees are so far the orchard’s sole occupants. The Dream Team hopes to locate and to add a heritage apple-graft tree to the orchard. Info, 378-2319
